The Environmental Impacts of Using Renewable Energy in Iraq’s Construction Industry
Abstract
The building sector in Iraq leads to environmental problems, caused mainly by large amounts of energy used, dependence on fossil fuels and high levels of greenhouse gas emissions. The research explores how solar and wind energy could help reduce environmental harm in Iraq’s construction sector. It recognizes that issues such as finances, infrastructure, rules that are not uniform and a lack of awareness bother the industry. The study uses a mixed-method approach, including a literature review, case studies, structured interviews with stakeholders and a quantitative analysis of surveys. The analysis is framed by three models: Diffusion of Innovation Theory, the Environmental Kuznets Curve, and the Sustainable Development Framework, offering insight into Iraq’s gradual energy transition. To encourage more people to use alternative energy, the study mentions offering a Renewable Energy Investment Tax Credit, starting a Green Building Certification program and having a Feed-In Tariff for those who use on-site solar power. These particular approaches could improve how construction handles sustainability and ensure Iraq uses green policies to boost its economy. This study seeks to influence policies and guide key players in Iraq to operate more sustainably in the construction industry.
